Wahoo Characteristics:

Wahoo are very slender, sleek, strong and fast. They are said by many to be the fastest swimming fish in the ocean. They are arguably one of the fastest swimming fish in the ocean. Wahoo are known for their long fast runs. They are a highly sought, beautiful fish. They have beautiful blue and silvery vertical stripes. The stripes may be most visible when a wahoo is initially boated. They often initially light up with their beautiful stripes and colors. The stripes then tend to fade away. They have a long and narrow mouth that is full of razor sharp teeth. Caution and care should be taken when handling or boating a wahoo because of their razor sharp teeth. Wahoo frequent the Gulf Stream water offshore of Miami and offshore of Miami Beach all year round. Many other types of fish can be caught while wahoo fishing. The best wahoo fishing in Miami generally occurs in the late spring and throughout the summer.

Wahoo Locations:

Wahoo can be found in the Gulf Stream or inshore of the Gulf Stream on the surface and below the surface. Most wahoo are caught in the dark indigo blue Gulf Stream water offshore of Miami and Miami Beach.

Wahoo Size / Weight Range:

It is common to see wahoo between approximately 10-pounds to 30-pounds. It is not uncommon for them to be over 30 pounds. Wahoo in the 30-pound class to 50-pound class are considered very nice fish. They can grow much larger than 50-pounds and wahoo over 100-pounds are gigantic. Size ranges can vary significantly. Wahoo are not a common regular catch but they sure are a delight to catch for anglers that get lucky enough to hook one of these gorgeous fish. Many other types of nice game fish including sailfish, marlin, dolphin, barracuda and tuna can be caught while wahoo fishing in Miami. Wahoo are a highly prized catch and a fish that is considered a beautiful trophy fish. Replica trophy mounts are also available for wahoo and other Deep Sea fish.

Wahoo Fighting Ability:

Wahoo are very good fighting fish. They are famous for their long hard runs. They often fight near the surface but sometimes can sound deeper. Wahoo fight differently when hooked while trolling at deeper depths compared to live bait fishing. When hooked on a trolling wire line, wahoo seem to shake their heads aggressively while fighting below the surface.

Wahoo Fishing in Miami – Fishing Techniques:

Live bait fishing, kite fishing, trolling, charter boat fishing and drift fishing are all good methods of wahoo fishing. The best method for wahoo fishing in Miami, in our opinion, is trolling. Trolling is an excellent technique for wahoo fishing in Miami because it allows the angler to cover a lot of water area.

Types of Bait for Wahoo Fishing in Miami:

Live bait, trolling baits and artificial lures including trolling spoons are all good baits for wahoo fishing in Miami. Live bait includes: live pilchards, herring, sardines, blue runners, mullet, pinfish and live small bonito (also known as, flippers or flipper bonito). Trolling baits for wahoo fishing in Miami includes: ballyhoo, ballyhoo with a bright fluorescent hula skirt, bonito strips, bonito strips with a bright fluorescent hula skirt, rigged swimming mullet, rigged leaded mullet and artificial lures and feathers. Ballyhoo and #3½ or #4 silver Drone spoons work well when fished separately on a wire line. Trolling down deep with ballyhoo and a bright fluorescent hula skirt or a big heavy trolling feather with ballyhoo can also work well for catching wahoo in Miami and Miami Beach.

Wahoo Fishing in Miami – Rods / Reels / Fishing Equipment:

For trolling, conventional fishing tackle including deep-sea fishing rods and reels is usually recommended. Deep Sea fishing rods and deep-sea fishing reels with 60-pound test line is usually adequate. Wahoo can also be caught and are caught on spinning rods and reels, especially when drift fishing, when fishing in a school of dolphin and at times when live bait fishing in Miami and Miami Beach.
