Bonito Characteristics:

Bonito can be used in the singular to describe a single fish or can be used in the plural to describe several fish. Bonito is most often spelled bonito although some might use the spelling bonita. They are a very compact and very strong fish. They are generally good robust feeders. Bonito have shades of green, blue and silver coloring. They generally have a compact strong body with dark wavy stripes on their upper back area behind their dorsal fin. They also have black spots below and aft of their pectoral fins. Their tails are quite strong. Little tunny are excellent fighting fish and can be found in Miami, Miami Beach and South Florida throughout the year although the best season for large schools is in the summertime. Bonito fishing in Miami and Miami Beach can provide action and excitement especially in the late spring and summer.

Bonito Locations:

Bonito are generally found offshore. They can be found offshore of Miami, Miami Beach and Ft. Lauderdale in ocean waters and in the Gulf Stream. They may be found on the surface or below the surface. Little tunny are often caught on or near the outside reef, which is also known as the 3rd reef.

Bonito Size / Weight Range:

For purposes of this discussion and in order to classify size we will classify bonito into 2 categories. Live bait size and larger bonito. Smaller bait size bonito are commonly called flippers. Flippers may be approximately 6 inches-8 inches in length and weigh approximately a ½-pound or so. When bonito fishing in Miami, other than bait size bonito, they average from about 2 or 3 pounds to about 10-pounds or 15-pounds. Bonito larger than 20-pounds are big and very strong. Large and small little tunny are very strong and powerful.

Bonito Fighting Ability:

Excellent. They are excellent fighters on conventional deep-sea fishing tackle and on spinning tackle. Families with kids often enjoy catching live bait size bonito because they can provide a lot of action along with a nice pull on light tackle.

Bonito Fishing in Miami – Fishing Techniques:

Trolling, live bait fishing, charter boat fishing, drift fishing and anchor fishing are all excellent methods for catching little tunny in Miami. The advantage of fishing on a charter boat, if you choose a charter boat that only takes a maximum of 6 passengers, is that the boat will only have a maximum of 6 passengers that are fishing. This can give the feeling of a private charter even when going on a shared fishing charter.

Types of Bait for Bonito Fishing in Miami:

Live bait, fresh bait, artificial lures, feather jigs, casting spoons and trolling spoons are good baits for bonito fishing. Trolling on the surface or below the surface with ballyhoo and bonito strips or using a silver #3½ Drone spoon on a wire line or planer are all excellent for catching little tunny. Live pilchards, herring, sardines and large live shrimp are very good bait when live bait fishing.

Bonito Fishing in Miami – Rods / Reels / Equipment:

This depends on your preference. Conventional fishing tackle including conventional deep-sea fishing rods and reels and spinning rods and spinning reels are excellent for bonito fishing in Miami. Bonito will put up an excellent fight on conventional deep-sea fishing tackle and on spinning tackle.
