Blackfin Tuna Characteristics:

Blackfin Tuna are short, compact and very strong. They are perhaps the type of tuna that is most widely sought after and most widely caught in the Atlantic Ocean offshore of Miami and Miami Beach. They are often compact in appearance and have a very dark upper body, a gold / bronze coloring across the middle of their body and a lighter coloring on their lower body, belly and underside.

Blackfin Tuna Locations:

Blackfin tuna can be found offshore in the Gulf Stream. They are usually top-feeding fish and most often found offshore of Miami, Miami Beach and Ft. Lauderdale in the dark indigo blue Gulf Stream water.

Blackfin Tuna Size / Weight Range:

It is common to see blackfin tuna from about 5-pounds or less to about 15-pounds. They can get much larger than 20-pounds and may grow to about 40-pounds. Blackfins of this size are rare in Miami.

Blackfin Tuna Fighting Ability:

Excellent. They are excellent fighting fish. For their size they are great fighters on conventional deep-sea fishing rods and reels and on spinning rods and spinning reels. Many people enjoy tuna fishing and especially blackfin tuna fishing in Miami and Miami Beach in the late spring and summertime. Blackfins are usually caught near the surface, however, they may fight on the surface or they may dig down and sound, (fight down deeper below the surface), on their hard runs after being hooked, especially on spinning tackle. Trolling baits including: ballyhoo, ballyhoo with a fluorescent hula skirt, bonito strips, bonito strips with a fluorescent hula skirt, bonito strips with a small white or white and red trolling feather, artificial trolling lures, artificial trolling feathers with a small strip of pork rind and trolling spoons make good for these hardy eaters. Live bait including: live pilchards, live herring and large live shrimp are good baits when live bait fishing.

When live bait fishing, it is the angler’s preference whether to use conventional deep-sea fishing rods and reels or spinning rods and spinning reels.
