Tuna Characteristics:

The types of tuna that are generally caught offshore of Miami, Miami Beach and South Florida are blackfin tuna, skipjack tuna and yellowfin tuna. Bluefin tuna and yellowfin tuna are a possible catch but they are quite rare in Miami and in South Florida. Most tuna in Miami are caught in offshore waters in the Gulf Stream. Tuna are generally considered as being in the mackerel family. They can grow to very large sizes and huge yellowfin tuna, also known as allison tuna, can get very large and they are very strong and very powerful. Bluefin tuna can also reach huge sizes and they too are very strong and very powerful. Tuna fishing in Miami can produce several types of tuna and they are all are very strong and good fighters. Large yellowfins may crash or explode onto bait, leaving a splash-like effect as they aggressively go after trolled bait. Tuna, especially blackfins, have a short, compact and very strong body. Yellowfin and Bluefin tuna can be very large and extremely powerful. Blackfins are caught in Miami all year round but are usually most plentiful in the spring and in the summertime. The most likely types of tuna that are found offshore of Miami and Miami Beach are blackfin tuna and skipjack tuna also known as artic bonito. Many fishermen have a nickname for artics calling them watermelons because of their watermelon-like shape along with their horizontal stripes. There are many other varieties of big fish offshore of Miami, Miami Beach and Ft. Lauderdale that can be caught while tuna fishing.

Tuna Locations:

Tuna are often found offshore in the Gulf Stream. They are usually top-feeding fish and most often found offshore of Miami, Miami Beach and Ft. Lauderdale in the dark indigo blue Gulf Stream water. Tuna can be caught while trolling offshore for other types of fish such as dolphin (mahi-mahi), wahoo, barracuda, marlin and sailfish.

Tuna Size / Weight Range:

There are many types of tuna and weights and sizes can vary drastically. Tuna fishing in Miami can produce wide variations in the size and weight of different types of tuna. Although giant bluefin tuna are rare off of Miami and Miami Beach it is a possibility. Large yellowfin tuna can grow to over 200 pounds. So, due to all of the above variables, we will say that tuna fishing in Miami can produce tuna from about 2 or 3 pounds to over 100-pounds or more. Generally, tuna of over 30 pounds or over 40 pounds are rare in Miami and in South Florida. Blackfin tuna are generally short, compact fish that are very strong and powerful with a very powerful tail.

Tuna Fighting Ability:

Excellent. Tuna are excellent fighting fish on conventional deep-sea fishing tackle and on spinning rods and reels. Tuna fishing in Miami can be fun for adults and for families with kids.

Tuna Fishing in Miami – Fishing Techniques:

Trolling, live bait fishing, kite fishing, charter boat fishing, drift fishing, anchor fishing. In general, trolling is the best method for tuna fishing in Miami because of the large amount of water area that is covered while trolling. Tuna often are not specifically targeted and are caught while trolling offshore for other types of deep-sea fish.

Types of Bait for Tuna Fishing in Miami:

Trolling baits for tuna fishing in Miami include: ballyhoo, ballyhoo with a bright fluorescent hula skirt, bonito strips, bonito strips with a bright fluorescent hula skirt, mullet, artificial trolling lures, trolling feathers and trolling spoons. Live bait for tuna fishing in Miami includes: live pilchards, sardines and herring. Live small bonito may work well for catching larger fish.

Tuna Fishing in Miami – Rods / Reels / Fishing Equipment:

Tuna fishing tackle: This depends on the angler’s preference. When trolling in Miami, conventional fishing tackle including deep-sea fishing rods and reels are often used. When live bait fishing it is the angler’s preference whether to use conventional deep-sea fishing rods and deep-sea fishing reels or spinning rods and reels. When fishing for larger varieties of tuna such as yellowfins and bluefins, conventional deep-sea fishing rods and deep-sea fishing reels are generally suggested. Some anglers may use conventional fishing rods with 60-pound to 80-pound test line and others may use heavy-duty tackle which is generally better for landing bigger fish.
