Grouper Characteristics:

There are many different types of grouper in Miami, Miami Beach, and South Florida, some of which are included above. Most are caught in offshore waters. They can also be caught in inshore waters and in the bay. Grouper are bottom-feeding fish and may widely vary in coloration and markings. Generally most varieties look similar. There is a difference in size, weight and coloration of different types of grouper. Different types of grouper may vary in color from gray, brown, red, yellow, spotted, wavy bands and many other different variations of color and markings.

Grouper Locations:

Grouper can be found in offshore and inshore waters on or near the bottom. They are often found in Miami, Miami Beach and Ft. Lauderdale over coral reefs, artificial reefs, sunken ships, coral patches, ledges, drop-offs and rocky bottom areas.

Grouper Size / Weight Range:

There are many types of grouper and weights and sizes can vary significantly. Grouper fishing in Miami can produce wide variations in the size and weight of various different species. They can vary in size and type from about 1 or 2 pounds to monstrous, very large grouper of over 100-pounds.

Grouper Fighting Ability:

Most grouper are excellent fighters on conventional deep-sea fishing rods and reels and excellent fighters on spinning rods and spinning reels. Conventional deep-sea fishing rods and deep-sea fishing reels are generally used for fishing over wrecks and artificial reefs. Heavier duty fishing equipment may be used when fishing in deeper water. Grouper fishing in Miami can be fun and very exciting.

Grouper Fishing in Miami – Fishing Techniques:

Trolling, bottom fishing, wreck fishing, reef fishing, artificial reef fishing, charter boat fishing, drift fishing and anchor fishing are good methods for grouper fishing in Miami. Trolling with a wire line over coral patches and shallow reef areas can also be a productive method of grouper fishing in Miami and Miami Beach.

Types of Bait for Grouper Fishing in Miami:

Fresh bait, strips of bait, chunks of bait and live bait. Fresh whole plugs of ballyhoo, ballyhoo strips, bonito strips and squid are excellent bait for big grouper. Bonito strips, bonito slabs and whole deboned small bonito also make excellent bait for grouper fishing in Miami. Live bait includes: pilchards, herring, goggle eyes, blue runners, pinfish, mullet and live small bonito which can all be quite productive for catching big fish. Artificial lures, vertical jigs and heavy feather jigs tipped with strips of bait can produce nice grouper at times, when dropped to the bottom and retrieved towards the surface. There are many different types of bait that can be used for grouper fishing in Miami. It is often advantageous to have a wide variety of baits onboard.

This depends on the angler’s preference. Smaller grouper and grouper in shallow water can be taken on spinning rods and spinning reels. Grouper in deeper water may require conventional deep-sea fishing rods and reels and sometimes fishing with a wire line can also be productive in deeper water.
