Barracuda Characteristics:

Barracuda are long slender fish with very big and very sharp saber-like teeth. Great barracuda have several nicknames including: barracuda, cuda, cudas, tigers, and ‘tiger of the sea’. Barracuda have a large protruding lower jaw. The color of barracuda varies slightly. They can have a greenish or grayish coloration on their upper body with iridescent colors across their upper middle body and silvery white sides and bottom. They often have black striping on their upper body with dark spots in the mid and rear portions of their body. Barracuda frequent Miami and Miami Beach waters all year round. Because of their big teeth and fierce reputation, barracuda fishing in Miami is popular throughout the year.

Barracuda – Locations:

Barracuda may be found inshore and offshore. They may be found in Miami, Miami Beach and Ft. Lauderdale near coral reefs, wrecks, artificial reefs and inlets. They can also be found swimming in the ocean, inland waterways or in the Gulf Stream.

Barracuda Size / Weight Range:

It is not uncommon to see barracuda from about 8-pounds to about 20-pounds. Their size can vary from very small and very slender to very large. Barracuda over 20-pounds are very nice fish. Barracuda can get much larger than 25 pounds.

Barracuda Fighting Ability:

Barracuda can put up an excellent fight. They can ferociously attack live bait and can battle very hard when hooked on live bait whether hooked on conventional deep-sea fishing rods and reels or whether hooked on spinning rods and spinning reels. They also fight well when hooked while trolling but they do seem to fight harder when hooked while live bait fishing compared to trolling. They often jump or splash on the surface especially when live bait fishing. Many people are fascinated with barracuda fishing. Barracuda Fishing in Miami – Fishing Techniques:

Trolling, live bait fishing, drift fishing, anchor fishing, fishing from inshore areas are good methods for barracuda fishing. Charter boat fishing can be an excellent method because charter boats can fish in several different areas while trying to find nice fish and they can also run to different areas in different depths to try to find nice fish including barracuda.

Types of Bait for Barracuda Fishing in Miami:

Trolling can be an excellent technique for barracuda fishing in Miami. Trolling baits include: ballyhoo, ballyhoo with fluorescent hula skirts, ballyhoo on a wire line with a fluorescent hula skirt, bonito strips, bonito strips with a fluorescent hula skirt, bonito strips on a wire line with a fluorescent hula skirt or with a big trolling feather, artificial trolling lures and an artificial spoon, especially a #3 ½ silver Drone spoon fished on a wire line. Live Bait can be great for barracuda fishing in Miami. Live baits include: live pilchards, herring, sardines, big live shrimp, blue runners, goggle eyes, pinfish, live ballyhoo and live small bonito. Casting spoons and artificial lures can also provide good action when fishing for these beautiful large toothy-fish.

Barracuda Fishing in Miami – Rods / Reels / Fishing Equipment:

This depends on the angler’s preference and the fishing technique being used. Some anglers prefer to use conventional fishing tackle with conventional deep-sea fishing rods and reels when trolling and some anglers prefer to use spinning rods and spinning reels when live bait fishing for barracuda. Most often when casting a lure or a spoon, spinning tackle is used although, at times, bait-casting reels can also be used.
