How Captains Decide Which Fishing Technique to Use

When you head out on a deep sea fishing trip, you may troll one day, fish with live bait the next, or spend part of the trip bottom fishing. So how does the captain decide which technique to use?

There isn’t one fishing method that works best every day. Fish behavior changes based on the weather, water conditions, season, location, and available bait. Experienced captains pay attention to all of these factors before deciding how and where to fish.

One of the first considerations is the species being targeted. Different fish feed and behave in different ways. Trolling can be a good option when searching larger areas of open water for species such as mahi-mahi, tuna, wahoo, and other game fish. Live bait fishing may be used when predators are actively feeding on natural bait in the area.

Bottom fishing is another technique commonly used around reefs, wrecks, and other underwater structures. Instead of keeping bait near the surface, the goal is to reach fish that spend more time closer to the ocean floor.

The captain also pays close attention to what’s happening on the water that day. Birds diving into the ocean, schools of bait fish, floating debris, weed lines, changes in water color, and surface activity can all provide clues about where fish might be feeding.

Marine electronics provide even more information. Fish finders, sonar, GPS, and other equipment can help identify underwater structures, depth changes, bait, and potential fish activity that can’t be seen from the boat.

Sometimes the original plan changes once the trip is underway. If one technique isn’t producing much activity, the captain may move to another area, change bait, adjust the fishing depth, or try an entirely different method. Being willing to adapt is an important part of successful offshore fishing.

That’s also one of the advantages of fishing with an experienced charter crew. Guests don’t need to know whether they should be trolling, bottom fishing, or using live bait before they arrive. The captain and crew can make those decisions based on their experience and the conditions that day.

At Therapy-IV, every trip is a little different. Our crew uses local knowledge, marine technology, and what’s happening on the water to determine which fishing techniques may provide the best opportunities.

Fishing is never completely predictable, and that’s part of the fun. The ability to change techniques and follow the signs of the ocean can turn any day offshore into an exciting adventure.
